Students at Edison Preparatory will be expected to dress for success each day during regular school hours. Not meeting these expectations will result in disciplinary action taken as defined by the Tulsa Public Schools Student and Family Guide to Success.
Upper Garments/Outerwear
- Shirts that fully cover a student’s torso (including stomach, back, and shoulders).
- Tops must conceal undergarments.
- Shirts and dresses must-have fabric in the front, bottoms, and sides.
- Students may wear hoodies or hooded sweatshirts in school buildings. (hoods should not be pulled up ) Students' faces must be completely visible at all times.
- Students should store outerwear (coats, hats, gloves, scarves, etc.) in their lockers (if applicable) upon arrival at school.
- Outerwear will not be permitted in classrooms, cafeterias, libraries, corridors, or other areas of the school buildings after arrival unless authorized by the school’s administration.
Lower Garments
- Clothing that fully covers a student from the waist down to at least mid-thigh.
- Permitted garments shall be clean and in good repair.
- Undergarments shall not be visible.
Footwear
- Students shall wear appropriate footwear for protection and hygienic reasons while on school grounds, participating in school activities, and on school transportation.
- House shoes are prohibited.
- Heelys (shoes with wheels on sole) are prohibited.
Head Coverings/Accessories
- Jewelry and other accessories shall not convey prohibited messages as defined below. Jewelry/accessories that pose a safety concern for the student or others are prohibited.
- Caps, ski masks, sunglasses, head coverings, and hats shall NOT be worn in the school building or classrooms unless prescribed by a physician, previously approved by the school’s administration for religious reasons, or approved by the school’s administration for a special school activity.
- Approved head coverings must allow the face to be visible and not interfere with the line of sight to any student or staff. The only exception is head coverings for religious reasons
Unacceptable Garments/Footwear/Head Coverings/Accessories
- Excessively large, small, or sagging clothes.
- Bare midriffs, immodestly low cut necklines, off the shoulder, or bare backs are prohibited.
- Fabric should not be see-through or made of mesh.
- Clothing may not depict, advertise or advocate the use of alcohol, tobacco, vapes, marijuana, or other controlled substances.
- Clothing may not depict pornography, nudity, crude, vulgar, profane, violent, death-oriented, gang related, sexually explicit, or sexually suggestive images or messages.
- Symbols, mottoes, words or acronyms identifying a student as a member of a secret or overtly antisocial group or gang or that identifies a student as a member of an organization that professes violence or hatred toward one’s fellow man.
- Visible tattoos or brands incompatible with the standards set above shall be covered to prohibit their display.
- Swimwear.
- House shoes are not permitted.
- Heelys (Shoes with wheels in sole).
- Ski Masks.
Religious and Health Accommodation
- Where a bona fide religious belief or health need of a student conflicts with the school dress code, reasonable accommodation shall be provided. Any student desiring accommodation shall notify the school principal in writing of the requested accommodation and the factual basis for the request. Approved coverings worn as part of a student’s bona fide religious practices or beliefs shall not be prohibited under this policy.
Athletic/Activities
- School team apparel or school organizational uniforms are allowed on days as approved by the school’s administration.
- All students participating in approved school activities are expected to comply with the required dress and personal appearance regulations of the activity in which they are participating.
- Students who refuse to dress as required by the school or sponsor will not be permitted to participate in the activity or to represent the school in any way.
Unusual Circumstances
- If any unusual situation relative to dress arises which is not specifically covered in this policy, the building administrator shall have the authority to rule on the appropriateness of the attire.
