It is strongly suggested that all Edison Preparatory Middle School students turn in four Summer Reading Projects. Reading and writing during the summer helps students to stay on top of their skills and be ready for a new school year. The book lists and projects are listed below. Projects may be handwritten or typed (preferably on a Google Doc).

Each project is worth 100 points:

• Project #1 points will be put in Canvas/PowerSchool at the end of 1st quarter
• Project #2 points will be put in Canvas/PowerSchool at the end of 2nd quarter
• Project #3 points will be put in Canvas/PowerSchool at the end of 3rd quarter
• Project #4 points will be put in Canvas/PowerSchool at the end of 4th quarter

Choose four books to read from the list below. Then, complete one project from the list below for each book.

Project List

Choose one project for each book read. You can do the same project twice if you want, but then choose another project for the other two. Or, do a different project for each one.

1. Choose one character you would like to interview. Write that character’s name and ten questions you would like to ask him/her. The questions should be related to the decisions made by the character or events in the book.
2. Write at least one page that would come next just after the novel ends. Title it The Next Page. Your writing should be a believable addition to the novel. It should be in the same point of view, tone, etc.
3. Write a Multiple-Choice Quiz for one of the novels. There must be 20 questions with three possible answers for each question.
4. Create a Double Entry Journal. Divide your page in the center from the top to the bottom. On the left side of the page write 12 direct quotes from the book including the page number. On the right side of the page, write your reflections or thoughts about each of the quotes.
5. Compare & Contrast - Read the book, and then watch the movie. Write one page detailing how the book and the movie are alike and how they are different. (This project would work with The City of Ember or The Secret Garden.)
6. Create a Movie Poster for the book on a piece of 8 x 10 copy paper or a piece of construction paper. It should include the following, but can include more: title of book, main characters, something from the setting, a hint of the plot (or story), and pictures that relate to the book. On a separate page, write a summary of the book (minimum of 200 words). Be sure to use paragraphs with complete sentences.

All four projects should be:

• Typed on a Google Doc or handwritten (to be photographed for submission)
• Turned into your language arts teacher the first week of school. Teachers will provide instructions on how to upload the summer reading assignments.

3. Imagine that you are the author. Your book just became a bestseller. Write a one page Letter to a Movie Producer trying to convince him/her to make your book into a movie. Give details from the book that would translate well to the big screen.
4. Create a Timeline with at least 15 events that occurred in the book. It must be chronological (in order of time).
5. Write or type at least one page (on a Google Doc) detailing how the story would be different if it were in the future or in the past. Title it Future or Past.
6. Write at least one page that would come next just after the novel ends. Title it The Next Page. Your writing should be a believable addition to the novel. It should be in the same point of view, tone, etc.

All four projects should be:

Project List

1. Create a Double Entry Journal – Divide your page in the center from the top to the bottom. On the left side of the page, write 20 direct quotes from the book including the page number. On the right side of the page, write your reflections or thoughts about each of the quotes.
2. Cast a play for the book. List at least 10 characters from the book and assign an actor to play that role. Include a 2 sentence summary for each actor explaining why they would be a good fit for that character. Choose one chapter from the book and rewrite it in play form.
3. Write at least one page that would come next just after the novel ends. Title it The Next Page. Your writing should be a believable addition to the novel. It should be in the same point of view, tone, etc.
4. Write or type a Book Blog on paper. It must be at least one page long. You must have at least three other people (parent, sibling, friend, etc.) comment on your Blog paper. A Blog is a piece of writing that gives your thoughts on a subject. In this case, give your informal thoughts on the events in the book.
5. Correspondence with Another Character – Pretend you are one of the characters in the book. Write a letter (in first person point of view) to another character in the book. It must be at least one page long.

All four projects should be:

• Turned into your language arts teacher the first week of school. Teachers will provide instructions on how to upload the summer reading assignments.
