EDISON WEEK 2013
February 11-14
Many students from both past and present cite Edison Week as the very best week of the entire school year. Thomas Edison's February 11th birthday is not only recognized, but glorified and celebrated for an entire week, Monday through Friday, in what is Edison High School's most cherished tradition, Edison Week.
The week long celebration is planned and coordinated by the Student Council. Student council members take suggestions from the student body and discuss possible themes for each week day and ultimately choose the themes with the most potential for widespread participation, creative costumes and controlled mayhem for that day. Each day is chaired by a Student Council Officer and a co-chair who work with a committee charged with overseeing the daily competitions during which students earn points for their respective classes. The teachers also participate by fielding a team to compete against the classes.

Monday is traditionally Green & White day -- a day when everyone celebrates the coming week by wearing green and white, but this day has been known as extreme green and white day. The intensity level of the competition and costumes increases Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Each day's respective theme is expressed through clever costumes and hard fought competitive battles for points that will eventually determine which class is the winner of Edison Week. Competitions range from the tried and true "Best Costume" to more adventuresome fare like kayak relay races in the pool. Points for each event are determined according to competition category which is based on level of difficulty. |
Categories are divided into small, medium and large. Small categories are things like lunch competitions and dress events, while medium categories are things like dance/skating party attendance and large categories (chances to earn lots of points), include the Class Skit, Class Cash for Charity and the much anticipated Guy Cheerleading competition. The Guy Cheerleaders from each class develop a routine with the assistance of female cheerleaders or pom squad members from their respective class. |

Friday is the culmination of the week long celebration. Students dress to look their best for the morning's assembly. During this assembly, the winners of the class superlatives are announced (each student participates in the nomination process), and the winners of all the various competitions throughout the week are recognized, including the overall winning class for all of Edison Week. It is at this time that the Mr. and Miss Edison candidates are presented on stage, and the one male student and the one female student for whom the students have voted to best personify the attributes of the ideal Edison student are crowned Mr. and Miss Edison. Happy Birthday, Tommy!
