7th Grade Team Success Syllabus
Dear Parent and Student,
The opening of the 2012-13 school year offers a new beginning for everyone at Edison Preparatory Middle School. We are looking forward to a year filled with new experiences and successfully meeting the challenges for each of our students.
This syllabus will acquaint you with policies which will enable your student to be successful. The procedures listed below are followed by all members of the team.
1. How to communicate with the teachers:
The best way to contact the teachers is via email. Use the 5 by 2 method:
• first five letters of the teacher’s last name then the first two letters of the teacher’s first name followed by@ tulsaschools.org (For example grantna@tulsaschools.org)
• It is best to email the teachers directly because the “Contact Me” on Sharpschool and Powerschool is not always reliable.
2. How to meet with the teachers:
To schedule a conference with the teachers, contact the 7th Grade Counselor, Mr. Strom, at 746-8500, and he will set up a time that is convenient for all concerned.
3. Progress Reports:
Students will receive the official school Progress Report during the 5th week and a grade card at the end of each quarter. Grades may be accessed by parents and students on a regular basis on PowerSchool.
4. Grading Policy:
All assignments are expected on the due date. However, assignments may be turned in one day late for half credit. If it is more than one day late, no credit will be given for that assignment. The exception to this rule is if your child is absent on the day the work is due. In that case, the assignment is due upon the return of the child to class. If a student has an excused absence when the assignment is assigned, he or she will be given the same number of days to make up the work as the number of days missed.
If a student is absent, it is his or her responsibility to ask for any assignments he or she may have missed and to turn them in completed.
If a student is suspended three or more days, he or she must complete work while on suspension. Work will be made available through the counselor and it is the student/parent’s responsibility to request and get the work prior to returning from suspension. The completed work is due on the day the student returns to school.
One way to avoid having missed work pile up is to access Sharpschool on the Edison website to find the daily assignments.

Students are expected to do only the work for the class that they are attending. Any work for a different class being done without teacher permission may be taken away and not returned to the student.
All typed assignments must be turned in as a hard copy. No disks, CDs, etc…will be accepted.
Cheating: All students involved in a cheating incident will receive no credit for that assignment. These assignments cannot be made up. Cheating includes, but is not limited to, copying from other students in or out of class, cheat sheets, text messaging information, and/or plagiarism. According to Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, plagiarism is “to steal and pass off the ideas or words of another as one’s own without crediting the source”. This includes hard copy and electronic media – i.e. copying and pasting from the internet.
5. Team Classroom Rules
Cell phones, iPods, etc… are not allowed in the classroom. They are to remain turned off and in the student’s locker. If they are brought into the classroom they will be confiscated and turned in to the appropriate administrator.
Backpacks, string bags, purses, etc… are not allowed in the classroom.
If a student chooses to wear a hoodie(only allowed on Fridays-Spirit Days) in the classroom, he/she may not carry any items in the front pocket. If the student fails to follow this rule, he/she will be asked to remove the hoodie and not wear it to class again.
6. Daily Planner:
Each student is given an Edison planner at the beginning of the school year. The planner is an excellent way for the student to be organized.
Students are required to write their assignments in the planner. Parents should insist on seeing the planners to help their student keep up with their assignments.
The planner may be used as another communication tool. There is a parent comment section. If you have questions or comments please write them in the planner. Have your student show it to the appropriate teacher(s).
The planner is the student’s hall pass.
NO PLANNER = NO HALL PASS to restroom, locker, etc…
7. Neatness:
It is very important that students learn to value the look of their work. Points may be deducted for the following items:
Improper heading
Messy paper --- work not legible will not be graded
Not following directions
Changing ink colors or changing from pencil to pen
We feel confident the above policies will help both parent and student enjoy a more successful 7th Grade year.
Thank you,
